St Albans came alive on Saturday 20 June as the annual Alban Day Pilgrimage and Festival returned, celebrating the life and legacy of Britain’s first saint with a vibrant, city-wide programme of activity.
Organised by St Albans Cathedral in partnership with St Albans BID, the event drew residents, visitors, and local organisations into the heart of the city for a day filled with heritage, creativity and community spirit.
The Civic Centre Plaza was transformed into a lively hub of medieval-inspired experiences, with activities running throughout the day. Visitors enjoyed an exciting mix of interactive workshops and performances—from chain maille making and manuscript sessions to apothecary displays, traditional pilgrim games, and fascinating talks on medieval medicine and surgery. A roaming jester brought energy and humour to the day, while live music from a 15-strong ukulele band and coverage from Mix 92.6 added to the vibrant festival atmosphere.
Families and visitors of all ages embraced the hands-on activities, including face painting, owl encounters, heritage-themed crazy golf, and the opportunity to contribute to a collaborative pottery installation—a wonderful reflection of the community coming together.
One of the day’s standout moments was the Alban Pilgrimage Procession, which set off from St Peter’s Church and made its way through the city to the Cathedral. Featuring giant puppets and colourful pageantry, the procession was a striking and memorable spectacle, drawing crowds along the route.
The day concluded at St Albans Cathedral with special services, providing a fitting end to a celebration rooted in history, community, and shared identity.
Feedback from participants and partners highlighted the success and impact of the event.
2Lt Zackary Pugh, Detachment Commander (ACF), said:
“The Cadets and I thoroughly enjoyed the event. It is great to have St Albans Detachment back in the community again!”
Jacqueline Harrop from Dacorum & Chiltern Potters Guild added:
“Thank you so much to you and your team for another successful event. We really enjoyed the day and it felt more popular than ever.”
All in all, the festival was a joyful celebration of St Albans and its rich heritage, bringing together businesses, community groups, performers, and visitors in a truly unique way. Events like this continue to highlight the strength, creativity, and unity of the local community—something that makes St Albans such a special place.
We hope you enjoy looking through the photos from the day, and we extend our thanks to everyone who supported and contributed to making the event such a success.
