A discussion took place between Independent Businesses about setting up a scheme that would give their customers a discount on their purchases that would go towards the cost of their parking. As the busy Christmas season approaches, the businesses wish to make sure customers are welcomed into St Albans.
On behalf of those involved in the discussion, four business representatives agreed to head up the scheme and explore how it may work. BID was invited to assist.
Running time of the scheme: Tuesday 30 September 2025 till Saturday 31 January 2026
Offering a discount needs to be beneficial for the customer but also for the businesses so a minimum of a 4hr stay in a city centre car park was agreed. It was felt that this period would encourage a longer stay and more spend.
The minimum stay of 4hrs, and the presentation of evidence of a 4hr parking stay is the only ‘rule’.
It is recognised that businesses have different profit margin thresholds so no rule has been set on the amount of discount a business will offer. It is entirely up to the business to set out their own terms and agreements for when the level of discount offered.
For example, upon evidence of the 4hr parking period being shown, a business’ offer may be:
The businesses have created a logo and BID has funded window stickers to display for easy customer recognition. All you need to do is request one from: info@stalbansbid.com
BID has also created a Discount Offer template poster for businesses to write what their offer is, and display in their premises. Businesses can download the poster as many times as their discount offers change. Download it here
BID will collate a list of participating businesses and help promote the scheme to customers through its @shopstalbans social media platforms. Business can promote the scheme themselves by downloading the logo assets and using them on their social media platforms and website. Download it here
As above, Tuesday 30 September 2025 till Saturday 31 January 2026. These dates aim to ensure the build-up and Christmas season is covered. Feedback from participating businesses will be invited.
