International Women’s Day, which takes place annually on 8th March, celebrates the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also emphasises a call to action for accelerating women’s equality.
To mark International Women’s Day 2025, St Albans City Centre BID asked female business owners in the BID area to share their experiences and advice for aspiring entrepreneurs.
Sally-Anne Shepherd, Clinic Director, Eve & Adam Beauty Clinic :
“Don’t lose sight of the bigger plan. I opened my salon with a 7 week in tow. Not the easiest of starts juggling single parenting with a new business. It involves sacrifice, guilt and stress, but the benefits of flexibility and control of my own future outweighed that.
Always take your days off with your family when planned. It is too easy to put your business first, especially when in its infancy. The right customers will understand and wait.
In order to keep strong and resilient it’s important to be fit in body and mind. Factor time for yourself and a break away from work whether it’s for a lunchtime walk or run or 20 minutes of meditation and don’t sacrifice it – you’ll possibly be a nicer person to work with!
Never think you can do it all. It’s easy to slip into the mindset you’ll be saving money to attempt everything, but buying in expertise in the areas you need is invaluable and will save money in the long run.
Don’t put off what can be done today – something else always unexpectedly pops up tomorrow and the to do list never ends!
Check out help for new starters. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. There are many schemes and mentors available for guidance.
Embrace competition and your peers – Sharing knowledge is helpful and supportive.”
