Swift Action for St Albans’ swifts

18 May 2022

Swift Action

St Albans BID are thrilled to have supported the SWIFT ACTION project by Wilderhood Watch which saw several swift nesting boxes successfully installed on the Civic Centre.

Population numbers of swifts have dwindled over the years due to the lack of suitable nesting sites, meaning the boxes have given these remarkable birds a suitable nesting spot after their long migration from Africa.

The nesting boxes were funded by St Albans BID, while the PA system (which plays swift calls to help attract the swifts) and part of the installation costs were funded by Wilderhood Watch. The remaining installation costs were covered by St Albans District Council.

Jamie Day, chair of Climate Action Group said: “SADC is pleased to work with its partner St Albans BID to support the Wilderhood Watch project and install these swift boxes at the Civic Centre. It will help meet our aim of encouraging greater biodiversity within our City.”

The BID has funded 40 boxes which will be installed across the city before the next mating season

St Albans BID Board Director, Mandy McNeil, said, “We’re delighted to have been able to partner with Wilderhood Watch and fund the nesting boxes for the St Albans swift population. Thank you to the businesses who have allowed these boxes to be installed on their properties and have helped fund the boxes via their levies.

We look forward to working with more local businesses to get the remaining boxes installed ahead of the next mating season”

Simon Grover of the St Albans Green Party, “This is an important project, amongst many that are happening all across the district, as we work to encourage nature and increase biodiversity.”
